Robust, Real-Time 3D Face Tracking from a Monocular View

چکیده
This paper addresses the problem of 3D face tracking from a monocular view. Dominant tracking algorithms in current literature can be classified as intensity-based or feature-based methods. Intensity-based methods track 3D faces based on the brightness constraint, assuming constant intensity of the face across adjacent frames. Feature-based trackers use local 2D features to determine sparse pairs of corresponding points between two frames and estimate 3D pose from these correspondences. We argue that using either approach alone neglects valuable visual information used in the other method. We therefore propose a novel hybrid tracking approach that integrates multiple visual cues. The hybrid tracker uses a nonlinear optimization framework to incorporate both feature correspondence and brightness constraints, and achieves reliable 3D face tracking in real-time. We conduct a series of experiments to analyze our approach and compare its performance with other state-of-the-art trackers. The experiments consist of synthetic sequences with simulated environmental factors and real-world sequences with estimated ground truth. Results show that the hybrid tracker is superior in both accuracy and robustness, particularly when dealing with challenging conditions such as occlusion and extreme lighting. We close with a description of a real-world human-computer interaction application based on our hybrid tracker.

Real Time 3D Face Pose Discrimination Based On Active IR Illumination
In this paper, we introduce a new approach for realtime 3D face pose discrimination based on active IR illumination from a monocular view of the camera. Under the IR illumination; the pupils appear bright. We develop algorithms for efficient and robust detection and tracking pupils in real time. Based on the geometric distortions of pupils under different face orientations, an eigen eye feature...
متن کامل3D Face pose estimation and tracking from a monocular camera
In this paper, we describe a new approach for estimating and tracking three-dimensional (3D) pose of a human face from the face images obtained from a single monocular view with full perspective projection. We assume that the shape of a 3D face can be approximated by an ellipse and that the aspect ratio of 3D face ellipse is given. Given a monocular image of a face, we ®rst perform an ellipse d...
متن کاملReal Time 3D Facial Movement Tracking Using a Monocular Camera
The paper proposes a robust framework for 3D facial movement tracking in real time using a monocular camera. It is designed to estimate the 3D face pose and local facial animation such as eyelid movement and mouth movement. The framework firstly utilizes the Discriminative Shape Regression method to locate the facial feature points on the 2D image and fuses the 2D data with a 3D face model usin...
متن کاملAn Alternative Approach to Recovering 3D Pose Information from 2D Data
A novel approach is presented for real-time pose estimation of a known object being observed through a single camera. The future aim is to develop the method outlined here into a robust closed-form solution suitable for implementation on a monocular face tracking system. However, the method outlined in this paper offers a generic 2D to 3D pose estimation technique which is not limited to face t...
متن کاملMonocular Tracking of the Human Arm in 3D
We have developed a system capable of tracking a human arm in 3D and in real time. The system is based on a previously developed algorithm for 3D tracking which requires only a monocular view and no special markers on the body [9]. In this paper we describe our real-time system and the insights gained from real-time experimentation.
